Annotate the web with Google Sidewiki

09-23-2009

Today, Google launched a new feature in Google Toolbar called Google Sidewiki. This new feature allows you to contribute helpful information next to any webpage as you browse the Internet. Google Sidewiki appears as a browser sidebar, where you can read and write entries along the side of the page.

Google uses an algorithm to rank Sidewiki entries and promotes the most useful, high-quality entries. Feedback from other users as well as previous entries made by the same author are taken into account when determining which entries should appear first.

Another part of Google Sidewiki is technology that will take your entry and show it next to webpages that contain the same snippet of text. An entry on a speech by President Obama, for example, will appear on all webpages that feature the same quote.

It is very possible that Sidewiki will eventually integrate with Google Wave. Google Wave is a forthcoming tool that will allow for real-time collaboration with richly formatted text, photos, videos, maps, and more.

Visit the Google Sidewiki page to download Google Toolbar with Sidewiki to start contributing your own entries today.
